Create50 community filmmaker Andy Sowerby has made a scifi short and I asked him to share more about it so we can all experience it and get inspired by his journey. Over to Andy…
What is ‘The Jump’? An astronaut braves a pioneering solo mission into deep space, leaving behind her loving husband. Through disjointed communications, she discovers her life on Earth has changed forever. ‘The Jump’ is a short sci-fi drama on the elasticity of time, love and loss. The film was produced for the NASA short film competition CineSpace, where filmmakers are asked to make a short film, of 10 mins or less duration, that contains at least 10% footage from the NASA Archives, using actual NASA imagery within the film. We used a broad selection of NASA archive footage mixed with new material shot by the production team.
After a successful festival run, including screening at Sci-Fi London Film Festival, Court Métrange Film Festival, Boston Science Fiction Film Festival 2019, and Philip K Dick Science Fiction Film. It was a finalist in the Lacie PushPlay Competition and won best sci-fi short at New Forest Film Festival.
The film is available to view on Omeleto – an online channel to “showcase your favorite short films you haven’t seen yet — ranging from Sundance, Oscars and Cannes-selected directors to young, talented newcomers.” The film currently has over 12,000 views and has been well received.
I also did an interview for Recursor, that “features the best science fiction available on planet earth. Here you can explore a growing database of short films and series created by a new generation of visionaries.”
